Novak Djokovic clinched the most hard court wins across Grand Slam events in men’s history with victory over Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3.
The win was his 192nd on a hard court at a Major, surpassing Roger Federer’s 191. The Australian Open and US Open are the two events that are played on a hard court. Djokovic also has the most match wins across all four Grand Slams at 395, 26 ahead of Federer.
Serena Williams holds the record on the women’s side with 200 of her 367 Grand Slam match wins coming on a hard court.
Djokovic picked up a bit of a back issue late in the first set but managed to serve it out. He didn’t seem as sharp in the second, and Norrie raised his level to take a thrilling tie break.
Sensing the match at a crucial stage, Djokovic found another gear to take the third and fourth sets quite comfortably. He exhibited some terrific shot making in doing so.
The Serbian happened to pick up another record as well, reaching the Round of 16 of a Major for a record 69th time. He is tied with Federer in that category. As a result, Djokovic now has the most second round, third round, fourth round, quarterfinal, semifinal and final appearances at a Grand Slam in history.
He needs one more first round appearance to complete the full set. Djokovic will play Jan-Lennard Struff in the next round.
Rapper Fat Joe Watches And Meets Djokovic
In attendance for this third round clash was New York rapper Fat Joe. Speaking after his victory, Djokovic had some words of appreciation for the support.
“One of the most famous rappers is in the house tonight and when they played his song I was tempted to stand up and start dancing,” Djokovic said. “But, I don’t think I would look very serious. Thanks for showing up, man, appreciate it.”
They met after the match as well, Djokovic dabbling with the famous “Lean Back” move while in conversation.
