Naomi Osaka

Grand Slam champions are colliding in the women’s draw of the US Open Round of 16.

Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, all on hardcourts, will take on Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion (one on clay and one on hardcourts).

The Wimbledon champions, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova will play each other.

Naomi Osaka vs. Coco Gauff

Gauff leads the head-to-head 3-2. All five matches were on hardcourts.

Osaka’s wins came in 2019 and 2021. Gauff has won the last two meetings in 2022 and 2024.

It is hard to say which woman has more to gain from this match; however, Osaka would be the likely choice.

Osaka has not been in the second week of a Grand Slam for five years, and she has not won one in four years.

Each player will have nerves to overcome. Osaka has not been in this position for a long time, and Gauff is still working on revamping her serve which can let her down in nervous moments.

Gauff’s recent experience makes her the favorite to win, but it could be a nail biter that could go Osaka’s way if Gauff’s serve gives her trouble.

Osaka vs. Gauff will play Monday at a time to be determined.

Elena Rybakina vs. Marketa Vondrousova

The 2022 and 2023 Wimbledon champions, Rybakina and Vondrousova, have met two times and split the matches.

Rybakina won on clay in 2023, and Vondrousova won on hardcourts in 2021.

Both were straight set matches.

Rybakina relies on her big serve, and Vondrousova is a lefty with crafty shots that can frustrate players.

This is a toss-up and too close to call, but fans hope it goes three sets.

Rybakina vs. Vondrouosva is slated to be a Sunday night match beginning at approximately 8:40 PM ET.

Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Barbora Krejcikova are the other Grand Slam champions left in the draw.
