In an unpredictable grass season, WTA tennis has produced another interesting final matchup at the Berlin Open with Xinyu Wang facing Marketa Vondrouosova. While Vondrousova is a household name after winning Wimbledon in 2023, she has not made it to a WTA final since. 23-year-old Xinyu Wang, better known for doubles prowess and as the 2023 French Open women’s doubles champion, is less known. Her run through the Berlin Open is reminscient of Tatjana Maria‘s Cinderella run at Queen’s Club last week. She entered the tournament as a qualifier and has flown below the radar despite defeating Ons Jabeur in qualifiers and then Daria Kasatkina, 2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff, Paula Badosa (who retired after losing the first set to Wang), and 2021 Berlin Open champion Liudmila Samsonova in the main draw. Xinyu #Wang completes the sensation! The qualifier defeats Liudmila #Samsonova in straight sets and will play for her very first WTA singles title tomorrow.#BTO pic.twitter.com/73ijaITqoX — Berlin Tennis Open (@berlin_tennis) June 21, 2025 Xinyu Wang vs. Marketa Vondrousova head-to-head The 49th ranked Wang faces a deceptively low ranked Vondrousova at World No. 164. Vondrousova has struggled with injuries for the past two years, and it is refreshing to see her play freely and without health issues at last. Wang and Vondrousova have never played each other so it should be an interesting matchup in contrasting styles with left handed Vondrouosova wanting to utilize the skills that got her a Wimbledon title. Women’s tennis is deep Though Aryna Sabalenka has a decisive lead in points and will retain the World No. 1 ranking for the foreseeable future, it is clear that the talent in women’s tennis runs much deeper than the Top 5 or 10 players. Vondrousova handed Sabalenka a straight set loss in the Berlin Open semifinals. Marketa Vondrousova takes out the World No. 1 to reach her first final since Wimbledon 2023 🤯 #BTO pic.twitter.com/ipmTzjadmA — Tennis Channel (@TennisChannel) June 21, 2025 It makes the game entertaining to watch knowing that on any given day, players outside the Top 20, as Xinyu Wang and Marketa Vondrousova currently are, can produce a high level of tennis and beat anyone.
