37-year-old West German born Tatjana Maria had an epic week at the Queen’s Club Championships.  While epic is an often overused word, it applies to Maria’s life perfectly. Maria, the mother of two daughters, 11 and 4, notched another win for the tennis moms in the process.

Tatjana Maria entered the main draw of the tournament as a qualifier and defeated 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and 2025 Doha champion Amanda Anisimova en route to the biggest title victory and the fourth of her career.

Her style of play is a bit of a throwback and shines on the grass.  It consists of tricky slice shots on the forehand and backhand side, and chip and charge play at the net.

With the win, Maria turns the corner over a two-month losing streak where she lost nine matches.

Grass Is Tatjana Maria’s Friend

Maria’s game thrives on the grass, and it shows in her record.  She is 7-5 lifetime on the grass against Top 20 players.  On clay and hardcourts, she is 4-40.   Against Top 10 players she has six wins with three occurring on grass.

She was a 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist, and during that run, she defeated Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko before losing to Ons Jabeur.  Ironically, Jabeur lost to Rybakina in the finals, and Maria defeated Rybakina earlier in the week.

Her last singles title was in Bogota in 2023.

Currently ranked World No. 86, she is expected to make a leap into the 40s and be at or near her career-high of World No. 42, achieved in January 2024.

Amanda Anisimova was at times baffled by Maria’s shotmaking because it is different than the top ranked players on the WTA Tour.  Anisimova was able to make inroads on Maria’s second serve, but otherwise, she struggled to stay in rallies because Maria hit brilliantly paced shots to all corners of the court.

Tatjana Maria is a name to keep a watchful eye on as Wimbledon begins later this month.  With how she is playing right now, she could mount a deep run as she did three years ago.
