The San Francisco 49ers have been bitten by the injury bug yet again. The team that has dealt with season-altering health issues over the last handful of years is seeing the trend return early in 2025, and now their most important player could miss up to a month of action.
49ers Could Be Without Brock Purdy For A Month
Quarterback Brock Purdy had seen his stable of offensive weapons take a serious hit early this season. Already without Brandon Aiyuk for an extended period, George Kittle has been placed on the injured reserved list and Jauan Jennings’ status was questionable early in the week. It certainly looked like they’d be facing a tough stretch, but things have gone from bad to worse for Kyle Shanahan’s team.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Purdy himself was dealing with a potentially serious injury. Due to ailments with both his shoulder and toe, the team announced that it was “unlikely” that Purdy would play in Sunday’s game against the Saints.
On Thursday, that report was confirmed. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Brock Purdy will miss anywhere between 2 and 5 games, and the official listing for his absence is “turf toe”.
It is yet another tough blow for the 49ers, and one that could adversely affect their season. Mac Jones will be under center for San Francisco for however long Purdy is out, and the former 15th overall pick is on his third team in as many seasons. It will be interesting to see how effective Shanahan can make the 27-year-old Jones, but there will almost certainly be a drop off in production.
Can San Francisco Stay Afloat In Purdy’s Absence?
Can the team stay afloat? Luckily for them, the 49ers have one of the easiest schedules of any NFL team in the last decade, and have some winnable games in the coming weeks. After they travel to New Orleans for Week 2, they’ll be at home for two weeks for games against the Cardinals and Jaguars, which are contests that Purdy will likely miss.

But Purdy’s availability will be a key factor once the calendar turns over to October. In what will very likely be their toughest stretch of the season, the opponents for the 49ers between weeks five and eight are the Rams, Buccaneers, Falcons, and Texans. While those teams aren’t exactly title contenders, defeating them would be much tougher without Purdy in the lineup.
