Betting Line For 49ers vs. Saints Drops Drastically After Brock Purdy News

The San Francisco 49ers were favored by more than a touchdown over the New Orleans Saints when the betting lines for the Week 2 matchup were first released. But due to some tough news on the injury front for Kyle Shanahan’s team, the number has dropped drastically.

Betting Line For 49ers Week 2 Game Shifts Drastically

The 49ers picked up a clutch win in Week 1, but it came at a price. The team that was already riddled with injury issues lost George Kittle early in the contest against the Seattle Seahawks, who will miss a month after being placed on the injured reserved list.

With Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from his injury last season, the options were running thin for quarterback Brock Purdy.

But Purdy himself is now dealing with health issues. It was reported early in the day on Wednesday that the 25-year-old signal caller missed 49ers practice due to both shoulder and toe ailments, and things appear to be more serious than originally thought.

According to Adam Schefter and other NFL insiders, Purdy is a “long shot” to play Sunday against the Saints. To make matters worse, the injury appears to be substantial enough for the team to announce that he could miss “multiple weeks”, which puts the immediate future of the offense in jeopardy.

Mac Jones Will Take Over As San Francisco’s Starter

With all signs pointing to Purdy being out for Week 2, the betting line has taken an enormous shift. After opening as 7.5-point road favorites against New Orleans, the line is down to less than a field goal at -2.5. Mac Jones is listed as San Francisco’s backup, and will take over for however long Purdy is out for.

Can the 49ers weather the storm without their starting quarterback? They came into the year with one of the softest NFL schedules that we have seen in a decade, and their next three games are against teams that went a combined 17-34 in 2024. An optimal time for Brock Purdy to return to action would be on a Thursday night in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams, or 10 days later when they pay a visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
