It’s not looking good for Purdy.
During Wednesday’s press conference, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Purdy is a “long shot” to play in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Purdy injured his toe and shoulder in Week 1’s 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Per Shanahan, the toe is the greater issue at the moment.
Purdy’s rehab might take longer than expected, which would keep him out for multiple games.
Purdy is not expected to practice on Wednesday. If no other news comes out in the next two days, Friday’s injury report will be key in determining Purdy’s status for Week 2.
Shanahan said Purdy’s injury happened in the second quarter of the Seahawks’ game. Seattle safety Julian Love tackled Purdy near the sideline, injuring him.
Purdy finished the game and led the 49ers to a comeback victory.
With 3:42 left in the fourth quarter, the 49ers received the ball down 13-10. On the second play of the drive, Purdy completed a 45-yard pitch and catch to Ricky Pearsall, who ran the ball to Seattle’s 22-yard line.
On 3rd-and-3 from the 4-yard line, Purdy scrambled behind the line of scrimmage before heaving the ball to the corner of the end zone. The ball looked like it was going to be intercepted by the Seahawks before third-string tight end Jake Tonges snatched it out of the air for the touchdown.
The 49ers hit the extra point to take the lead 17-13.
The next drive, the Seahawks drove the ball to the 49ers’ 9-yard line. The next play, Nick Bosa strip-sacked quarterback Sam Darnold to seal the victory for the 49ers.
Purdy finished the game 26 of 35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Purdy moved to a perfect 4-0 as a starter at Lumen Field.
With Purdy likely out, Mac Jones is in line to start in Week 2. The former first-round pick with the New England Patriots starter spent last season as the backup quarterback to Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.
Jones signed a two-year contract with the 49ers back in March.
Jones is 20–29 in 49 career starts. The 27-year-old has thrown for 10,590 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 44 interceptions in 52 games.
49ers Dealing With Injuries At Major Positions

Purdy is not the only notable 49ers player who suffered an injury in Sunday’s win.
Tight end George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury after making four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers placed Kittle on injured reserve, meaning he will miss the next four games. Kittle is eligible to return in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 12.
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. Jennings is considered day-to-day and could play.
The 49ers (1-0) hit the road to play the Saints (0-1) in Week 2.
