Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ top draft pick, is heading to injured reserve after suffering a knee injury.

Travis Hunter Injury Update

Hunter’s rookie season has suffered a major setback.

Head coach Liam Coen announced on Friday that Hunter suffered a non-contact knee injury in practice on Thursday. Hunter will be placed on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least four games.

“We’re currently assessing the injury, just to determine the best course of action moving forward for Travis and for the team,” Coen said. “You just feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team, for everything. But he’s in good spirits right now. Minor setback for a major comeback. That’s just the way it’s gotta be.”

Hunter suffered a knee injury while practicing on the defensive side of the ball. Coen is unsure about the severity of the injury. There is a chance Hunter could miss even more than the required four games.

The Jaguars’ next four games: at Las Vegas Raiders, at Houston Texans, vs. Los Angeles Chargers, and at Arizona Cardinals.

Hunter, the No. 2 pick, is off to a slow start this season as he adjusts to playing on both sides of the ball. Hunter has played 305 snaps compared to 154 on defense.

On offense, Hunter has 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown. Hunter also has 15 tackles and three pass breakups on defense.

Hunter is coming off his best game of the season, where he snagged eight receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown in the Week 7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in London.

“It’s definitely not ideal timing, not that any injury is ever ideal timing,” Coen said. “Not that any injuries are ever ideal timing, but got to believe the makeup, his general attitude towards life, and how he handles dealing with specific situations — I have a lot of belief in Travis as a person, as a competitor, to come back better than ever.”

Jaguars Find Themselves in an Interesting Place

Jacksonville has experienced the highs and lows of an NFL season. In Week 5, the Jaguars picked up their best win in years — a Monday Night Football victory over the Kansas City Chiefs — to move to 4-1.

Since the Chiefs’ win, the Jaguars have dropped two straight and find themselves in the hunt for a wild-card spot.

Jacksonville’s offense continues to struggle — bottom 10 in scoring (20.9 points per game).

The regression of wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is alarming. Thomas has 27 receptions for 365 yards and one touchdown. Considering that many experts believed he would take the next step to elite status, Thomas has disappointed through seven games.

The defense continues to live and die by the turnover — 14 turnovers is third in the NFL.

If Jacksonville wants to be taken seriously in the AFC postseason picture, they must be the Raiders (2-5) on Sunday.
