Heading into the Nov. 4 trade deadline, the Chargers desperately needed help on the offensive line. Reinforcements are now on the way from New Orleans.
The Chargers traded a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Saints for Penning. Per the Chargers, the deal is pending a physical.
The Saints selected Penning in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Penning spent the first three seasons of his career at tackle. Penning played 23 games — including six starts — at left tackle during the first two seasons. The next year, Penning started in all 17 games at right tackle.
Penning missed the first three weeks of this season. Upon his return, Penning moved to left guard, where he has played this year.
Penning has only allowed one sack since Week 5.

The injury bug has decimated the Chargers’ offensive line.
Left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a season-ending torn patellar tendon during practice in August.
This week, the Chargers announced that Joe Alt, the team’s right tackle who replaced Slater on the left, will miss the remainder of the season with a high ankle injury. Alt needs surgery to repair the injury.
Right guard Mekhi Becton and right tackle Bobby Hart have also been dealing with injuries. Becton missed Week 9’s game with a knee injury. Hart left the game with ankle and groin injuries.
Jamaree Salyer and Trey Pipkins III replaced Alt and Hart, respectively.
Before the Penning trade, Salyer, Pipkins, and Austin Deculus were expected to be in the mix to play left tackle.
Penning has had his ups and downs the past few seasons. However, the Chargers (6-3) are betting on Penning’s first-round talent to help this offensive line. The Chargers only gave up a sixth-round pick, too.
Chargers Grade: B+
For the Saints, the rebuild is underway.
First-year head coach Kellen Moore made the move to start rookie quarterback Tyler Shough over Spencer Rattler in Week 9. If healthy, Shough will remain the starting quarterback the rest of the season.
At 1-8, the Saints are officially playing for the future. The Saints only received a sixth-round pick for Penning, which means it’s not going to move the needle.
The Rashid Shaheed trade will impact the Saints’ future more than this movie.
