Thanksgiving belongs to the favorites. Since 2004, the favorites are 40-20 against the spread (ATS) and 51-9 straight up (SU). The favorites this year are the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, and Baltimore Ravens.
If there is one coach who feels comfortable as an underdog, it’s Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur, who is 25-13-1 ATS and 20-18 SU. The Packers have the fourth-most wins on Thanksgiving (16), behind the Chicago Bears (20), Dallas Cowboys (34), and Detroit Lions (38).
The Packers and Lions squared off on Thanksgiving in 2023. The Packers jumped out to a 23-6 halftime lead on their way to a 29-22 victory over the Lions.
The Chiefs are the one underdog to keep an eye on. Since 2004, road favorites are 20-6 ATS and 25-1 SU. The lone loss came in 2009, when the New York Giants lost to the Denver Broncos.
Points should not be a problem in Dallas, as the over is 11-4 in the past 15 Cowboys’ Thanksgiving games.
In battles between two elite quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson has dominatedĀ Joe Burrow. Jackson is 4-3 ATS and 6-1 SU against Burrow.
The primetime game has not been kind to underdogs on Thanksgiving. Favorites are 15-3 SU in the Thanksgiving primetime game.
The Lions and Cowboys are the two teams that play on Thanksgiving every year. The trends say to back one and fade the other. Neither the Lions nor the Cowboys has covered the same Thanksgiving since 2001. Furthermore, the Lions and Cowboys have not gone a combined 2-0 ATS/SU on Thanksgiving since 1994.
