Four-star quarterback Legend Bey made headlines on National Signing Day by flipping his commitment from Ohio State back to Tennessee, where he de-committed just a month earlier. While recruits often change their minds and even tease schools by switching their hats or shirts on camera, this situation feels different. Behind the scenes, whispers of parental pressure, a blocked Letter of Intent, and a deleted social-media post have turned Bey’s recruitment into a firestorm.
Bey’s Mother Refused To Let Him Sign With Ohio State
A source near Bey told 247Sports that the 7th-ranked quarterback in the country fully intended on signing with Ohio State, but his mother wouldn’t sign his letter of intent. His booth on National Signing Day was even decked out in all Ohio State memorabilia. But since Bey is still just 17 years old, the NCAA requires a parent or legal guardian to co-sign the binding agreement.
Apparently, his mother and older brother forced his hand and he committed to Tennessee under duress. After flipping his commitment, Bey told Volquest that it was “a family decision.”
“There was a lot going on. Still had that relationship with coach [Josh Huepel] and I just felt like coming back home.”
Suddenly, what looked like a routine flip became a full-blown family standoff, one that effectively shut down his path to Columbus at the eleventh hour.
If that situation wasn’t bizarre enough, it took an even crazier turn on Thursday, when Bey went to X to share his unfiltered thoughts on the situation.
4-Star QB Is ‘Unhappy’ and May Seek Path To Be Released
In a now deleted post on X, Bey explained to fans what happened during his recruitment. “Good Afternoon, I was just recently logged out on IG and probably will be logged out of this account as well by my older brother, who has access to my account, because I won’t sign to the school him and my mother wants. – Legend Bey,” the post read.
Bey turns 18 years old on Christmas Eve, which is just a few weeks away. Until he flipped his commitment to Tennessee, some Ohio State fans thought that Bey might wait until he turned 18 before making his official decision.
But, there might still be another way out.
Mike Roach of 247Sports reported that Bey was unhappy with the decision and intends to seek a “path to be released” from Tennessee and end up at OSU. Bey would potentially do that if he can prove that he signed the letter of intent under duress.
Considered one of the best athletes in the country, Bey is not expected to play quarterback at the next level. Reports have him shifting to either wide receiver or running back but he’s expected to make an impact, no matter where he lands.
If Bey seeks a release or tries to make a move after turning 18, the fallout could trigger the NCAA to examine how much power parents should have over a minor’s binding commitment.
Because right now, the only thing standing between Legend Bey and the school he wanted… was a signature he wasn’t old enough to give.
