At the time, with the Calgary Flames turning to Ryan Huska as their new head coach, the news shocked a wave of NHL insiders.
Not to mention plenty of the organization’s players and staff.
Huska, a longtime assistant, appeared to be a familiar, safe choice. He knew the franchise and locker room, top to bottom. But, at the start of the 2023-24 season, the 49-year-old entered as a rookie coach, with no previous NHL head-coaching experience.
Many expected the Flames’ brass would promote AHL coach Mitch Love, who groomed many of the team’s top prospects.
Huska’s defense-first approach surprised others by helping guide a rebuilding roster into a playoff chase late into last season. He earned Jack Adams Award recognition.
Now? Nearing the halfway point of the 2024-25 regular season, BetOnline Sportsbook released its NHL’s next coach to be fired odds and Huska (+150) topped the list. Nashville Predators coach Andrew Brunette (+200) and Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff (+450) also drew top odds.
Did Huska make a statement with Thursday night’s 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild? Sparked by Jonathan Huberdeau’s first goal in 14 games, the Flames (10-15-4) ended a two-game skid and remained one point ahead of the last-place Vancouver Canucks in the Pacific Division.
Backup goalie Dustin Wolf executed 26 saves, stifling the Wild’s 12-game unbeaten streak. They had not lost in regulation since Nov. 6.
Timely win for Huska. Can he retain the trust of the Flames’ brass? Or will the organization quickly pivot to a “name” coach if they remain out of postseason contention?
