29-year-old American tennis player Taylor Townsend had an amazing 2025 WTA season. With partner Katerina Siniakova, she was crowned the 2025 Australian Open women’s doubles champion.
During the summer, she assumed the World No. 1 doubles ranking (from Siniakova) for the first time and became the first mother to be a top ranked player.
Townsend finished the year with four titles including a WTA 1000 win in Dubai with Siniakova, a WTA 500 win in Washington, DC with Zhang Shuai, and a WTA 250 win in Japan with Storm Hunter. She has 11 career doubles titles with six different partners.
Congrats to Taylor Townsend on winning her third consecutive doubles title in Adelaide. π She accomplished this three-peat with three different partners: 2024 w/ Haddad Maia, 2023 w/ Luisa Stefani and 2022 w/ Asia Muhammad. πͺπΌππΌ

With a career year behind her and an exciting 2026 on the horizon with more Grand Slam opportunities, it is shocking to hear that Townsend and her coach of nearly five years, John Williams, have split. Coaching changes happen all of the time in tennis, but they are usually prompted by a player not having a good year or performing below expectations. This was not the case for Towsend in 2025.
During her time with Williams, she achieved her best Grand Slam success (including two finals in mixed doubles) since turning professional in 2012. The two appeared to have a great relationship. This split is reported this week with a month to go before Townsend and Siniakova will hit the court in Melbourne to defend their Australian Open title.

This is a surprising development, and it makes us wonder who Townsend will seek out to be her coach. She must be practicing now. Who is helping her during this critical preseason training block? We wait and wonder but hope to learn more before the Australian Open begins in 33 days.
