Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried team up for the psychological thriller The Housemaid. The initial box office projections for The Housemaid suggest the movie should be a hit.

What is The Housemaid about?

Get ready for twists and turns in this new thriller.

Millie Calloway (Sweeney) is hired to be a housemaid at the wealthy residence of Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). Millie will be a live-in housemaid, where she will cook, clean, and complete other daily activities for the Winchester family.

The more Millie spends time in the house, the stranger things get. Millie, who is trying to escape her secret past, becomes entangled in a mystery that will leave you searching for answers.

“But what begins as a dream job quickly unravels into something far more dangerous – a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power,” Lionsgate’s synopsis reads. “Behind the Winchesters’ closed doors lies a world of shocking twists that will leave you guessing until the very end.”

Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins also star.

Paul Feig directs The Housemaid from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The movie is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name.

The Housemaid opens in theaters on December 19, 2025.

This weekend should be profitable for movie theaters thanks to the influx of new hits.

The big one is Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will easily be the No. 1 movie at the domestic box office.

The third Avatar adventure is looking at an opening of at least $90 million, but it can surpass $100 million with a strong surge.

The Housemaid won’t come close to that $90 million mark. However, it should still open north of $20 million. It’s the perfect counterprogramming option for Avatar — a psychological thriller compared to a sci-fi epic.

With a budget of $35 million, The Housemaid’s opening to north of $20 million is a good step toward profitability. Lionsgate is hoping the film does well during the holiday weekend and legs out to a worldwide gross of $100 million.

Update: The Housemaid opened to $19 million at the domestic box office.
