LeBron James Says Lakers Teammates Make Jokes About His NBA Records

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James says his teammates have enjoyed cracking jokes about the four-time NBA MVP breaking records throughout his historic 23rd season in the league.

“My teammates make jokes with me all the time, before I go out,” James said on Monday’s episode of the Mind the Game podcast. “They always say, ‘Welp, it’s gonna be another LeBron record tonight. The first guy to tie his shoestrings 100 times in a game, LeBron James.'”

“Like, they say I hold every record. ‘The first guy that runs out of the tunnel and don’t look down,’ or whatever. It’s like, there’s a record for everything,” James continued.

James made history last month when he finally made his season debut on Nov. 18. The future Hall of Famer became the first player to appear in 23 NBA seasons, surpassing Vince Carter (22).

LeBron James’ 10-Point Scoring Streak Ended

In addition, James’ historic streak of 1,297 consecutive double-digit regular-season scoring games ended Dec. 4, when he was held to eight points in a 123-120 win over the Toronto Raptors.

James’ streak started on Jan. 6, 2007. It was the longest such streak in NBA history: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787, and Karl Malone posted the fourth-longest run at 575.

During James’ streak, he reached the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth quarter 1,266 times entering Thursday, per ESPN Stats & Information.

Kevin Durant is the new active leader at 274 consecutive games.

James To Appear In 20th Christmas Day Game

James is also set to become the first NBA player to appear in 20 Christmas Day games when the Lakers host the Houston Rockets on Dec. 25 at 8 p.m. ET.

However, that’s one league record James doesn’t want to extend.

“I’d much rather be at home with my family,” James said last weekend. “But I mean, it’s the game, it’s the game I love. It’s the game I watched when I was a kid on Christmas Day, watching a lot of the greatest play the game on Christmas. It’s always been an honor to play it.

“Obviously, I’m gonna be completely honest, I would like to be home on the couch with my family all throughout the day. But my number is called — our number is called, so we have to go out and perform and I look forward to it.”

James, who turns 41 on Dec. 30, is averaging 20.2 points per game through 11 appearances this season. He’s also shooting 48% from the field and a career-worst 28.3% from deep.
