Carolina Panthers Notebook: Injured ILB Trevin Wallace Done Following Shoulder Surgery

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers inside linebacker Trevin Wallace has been absent during practices the past few weeks.

Coach Dave Canales explained why.

“Trevin had surgery on his shoulder,” Canales said Friday at Bank of America Stadium. “It was a playable condition, but he wasn’t really turning the corner to be able to play confidently the way that we know he can.

“So we re-evaluated that and really just collectively made that decision to make sure we can get this thing right, get ahead of it right now, and we have him getting ready to go for the spring and get him strong.”

Exiting Friday’s post-practice press conference, Canales expanded on Wallace’s season-ending injury. He could be ready for at least part of offseason training activities (OTAs).

“He was a stud about it,” Canales said of the second-year starter.

Wallace posted 61 tackles, including five for loss, four quarterback hits and two sacks in 12 appearances. With Wallace sidelined, Christian Rozeboom will wear the green dot and call the defensive alignments Sunday against the visiting Seattle Seahawks (12-3).

The Panthers can clinch the NFC South title with an upset win against the Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fall to the host Miami Dolphins.

Claudin Cherelus will start in place of Wallace for the second straight game. The former undrafted free agent compiled eight tackles during the Week 16 victory over the Buccaneers (7-8).

“It’s his style of play,” Canales said. “We’ve seen that on special teams for a while now. That’s his nature.

“I see a guy that’s really focused on seizing this moment.”

Carolina Panthers Injury Report

On the injury front, rookie wide receiver Terairoa McMillan (rest) and tackle Ikem Ekwonu (knee) practiced Friday and are expected to start against the Seahawks.

Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (hamstring) remains day-to-day.

“TMac’s good to go,” Canales said. “He had a great practice today, as you can understand, this late in the season, things come up and we work through those things and he’s been a real pro about it, getting his body ready and his mind right, being in tune when he’s not out there full time.”

Ekwonu missed last Sunday.

“He looked great, worked through it,” Canales said.
