Sam Darnold was known as a quarterback who could not win “the big game.”
Even after leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 2024 NFC North championship, Darnold struggled in his first NFL postseason start, which contributed to his exit. Under constant pressure from the Los Angeles Rams’ defense, Darnold posted a passer rating of 77.6 during the wild-card defeat. Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks as free agent last summer.
Perhaps Darnold’s fourth-quarter effort during the 38-37 overtime victory over the Rams on Dec. 18 will help alter his on-field reputation. The Seahawks seized the NFC’s top seed with the win. The Rams (+450), however, retained the top sports-betting odds to win Super Bowl LX, followed by the Seahawks (+600), according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
While turnovers continue to plague his game, Darnold, a Pro Bowler last season, continues evolving into a top-five signal-caller. Since 2024, Darnold compiled a 118.9 fourth-quarter passer rating when his team trailed by at least one score.
As a former Seahawks quarterback coach, current Carolina Panthers skipper Dave Canales spoke about Darnold’s career progression. Darnold faces the underdog Panthers (8-7) at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. The Seahawks (12-3) were favored by +7.
“Pointing to the past two seasons, no one has won more games from a quarterback standpoint,” Canales said during Friday’s post-practice press conference in Charlotte, N.C. “He’s done an excellent job bringing groups together. He brings leadership (and) is a talented passer.
“I see him continue to grow his game and I’m really impressed with his ability to go from Minnesota, to do what he did there, (then) go to Seattle, with a new group of guys and understanding the challenges from a quarterback’s perspective to finding that chemistry and cohesiveness, which he’s been able to do.”
