If an NHL general manager had any notion Vancouver Canucks left wing Kiefer Sherwood could become a bargain-bin acquision, none should now, despite his current injury. The “Hit King” remains one of the most popular topics among various NHL trade rumors.
Among the nearly 20 teams who have reached out, the San Jose Sharks, with a plethora of prospects and two second-round draft picks, could be an option before – or after – the Olympic roster freeze Feb. 4.
At the top end, it’s believed the Canucks seek an NHL-worthy prospect and a first-round draft pick for the pending unrestricted free agent.
The New York Rangers believed they offered a solid package recently: a mid-tier prospect and second round draft pick, but Canucks GM Patrik Allvin declined, according to TSN.
The Rangers certainly will not sweeten the offer for the 30-year old gritty, physical forward, especially after announcing a “retool” Friday.
Will the Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars or Minnesota Wild come up with the next offer?
Sherwood will not be acquired on the cheap.

Keifer Sherwood Remains Hot NHL Trade Rumor
Sherwood established a new all-time hits record last season, delivering 462 checks and added offense, too. He scored a career-high 19 goals last season. In 44 outings this season, he had 17 goals and 210 hits, averaging 17:22 of ice time. He posted a career-low minus-12 rating.
The first-round asking price is rumored to be a bit pricey – and that was before Sherwood was sidelined. He is expected to miss at least the rest of January.
Assuming Sherwood returns healthy, the Sharks (24-20-3) could use his veteran, gritty presence to round out the young roster. Returning Sunday at the Florida Panthers, they have won seven of their past 10 games. They entered Friday one point ahead of the Nashville Predators and Los Angeles Kings for the Western Conference’s second wild-card seed.
Despite injury concerns, Sherwood would be a short-term financial bargain for any team. He’s a potential 25-plus goal scorer who delivers hard checks and carries an affordable $1.5 million cap hit.
Will Allvin come down on his first-round wish list?
