Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay had little patience for an otherwise fair reporter’s question.
“Do you expect Matthew Stafford to be back next season?”
McVay initially appeared to be offended by the question, moments after Sunday’s 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship game.
“What the hell kind of question is that?” McVay said during his post-game press conference, via TheRams.com.
McVay then attempted to deflect the question.
“You have to ask him,” McVay said. “We’ve been totally present. I know that if he wants to, he’s still playing at a pretty damn good clip.”
At 37 years old, Stafford posted one of his best seasons of his future Hall of Fame career, completing 388 of 597 regular-season passes for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. His 109.2 passer rating was his best. In three playoff games, he posted 936 passing yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
FanDuel Sports tabbed Stafford (-195) as the overwhelming favorite to capture NFL MVP honors. New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (+160), who will compete for the Super Bowl LX title, received the second-best odds. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence remained the underdog at +30000.
Stafford also had a short answer regarding his near future.
“I can’t generalize six months of my life 10 minutes after a loss,” said Stafford, who returned this season after being granted to seek a trade last summer.
Stafford will be scheduled to make $40 million next season, the final year of his contract. Over the past few seasons, Stafford and the Rams have functioned on a season-to-season basis.
“He’s the MVP of the league,” McVay said.
