Sports Betting in Georgia Overview
Georgia lawmakers discussed legalized sports betting in the latest legislative session, but they once again failed to pass it. As of April2025, the state does not have legal betting or casinos within its borders.
State Population 11.03 million Gambling Regulator Commercial Gambling Unit Minimum Betting Age 18 Retail Betting No Online Betting No Fantasy Sports Yes Retail Casinos No Pari Mutuel Wagering No Horse Racing Yes, but no wagering allowed Online Casinos No Mobile Betting Apps No Is Online Sports Betting Legal in Georgia?
Georgia online sports betting is not legal other than through daily fantasy sports (DFS). Recent efforts to pass legal betting in GA did not make it through the legislature.
In 2024, a constitutional amendment made it out of committee but did not come to a vote in either the Georgia House or state Senate. The Associated Press reported that such legislation had no chance of receiving the two-thirds majority vote required to pass in either legislative body.
According to the American Gaming Association, as of April2025, Georgia is one of only 12 states without legal sports wagering. Border states Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida all offer legal sports gambling, while Alabama and South Carolina do not. Despite nearby legal states, legalized sports gambling does not look like it will be coming to Georgia soon.
Who Can Bet on Sports in Georgia?
In general, no-one can bet on sports in Georgia because the state has no physical casinos or sportsbooks. There is effectively no legal market.
Georgia does allow daily fantasy sports wagering though. In many states that have passed sports gambling legislation, daily fantasy wagering occurred first. This was often seen as a “test run” for expanded sports gambling.
The only other options for online betting in Georgia would be through offshore casinos.
Are Bet Winnings in Georgia Taxable?
Yes, bet winnings are taxable in Georgia, both at the state and federal level. As Georgia has such limited gambling options, these taxes don’t apply very often. However, they are part of state law.
For winnings of $7,000 or more, state residents pay 5.75% in state taxes. Federal taxes have their own rate based on income levels. Georgia state law requires residents to claim gambling winnings on their federal income taxes.
Georgia issues W-2G forms to state residents who win a minimum amount in gambling. This form is part of the state and federal income tax filing requirements. The W-2G form’s minimums are:
- $600 for the lottery and other types of gambling
- $1,200 for bingo
Should Georgia online betting ever become legal, similar tax laws would likely apply, although this has been the source of recent debate.
Recent Georgia Legal Sports Betting Updates
Legalizing Georgia sports betting would likely need either a constitutional amendment or authorizing legislation. A constitutional amendment requires two-thirds majority votes in both houses of the state legislature. Additionally, voters would then have to pass the constitutional amendment.
During the 2024 legislative session, disagreements over how to allocate the taxes on Georgia online sportsbooks derailed the legislation.
Georgia began offering a lottery in 1993. Multiple attempts at passing GA legislation for sports betting failed to advance to an official floor vote in any legislative session from 2020 to 2024.
A 2022 poll from the University of Georgia’s School of Public & International Affairs Survey Research Center showed 45.6% of state residents approved of GA online sports betting, with 42.6% opposed.

Georgia Southern, Georgia State, and Kennesaw State all have Division I collegiate athletic programs in the state of Georgia. All three schools play in college football’s FBS division. This means Georgia betting sites regularly offer wagering opportunities on their games.
Famous Sporting Events in Georgia
With the great Georgia weather and Atlanta’s large population, it’s not surprising that many major sporting events occur in the state. You can bet on all of them at Georgia sportsbooks. Golf is especially popular.
- The Masters: Augusta National Golf Club has hosted The Masters for more than 90 years. It is one of the world’s most popular golf tournaments. The winner receives an iconic green jacket. It usually takes place every April.
- PGA Tour Championship: The PGA Tour Championship tournament occurs at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta annually. It serves as the FedEx Cup Playoff finale each year in late summer.

Retail Gambling Outlets in Georgia
As Georgia does not yet have legalized casino or sports gambling, the state has no retail gambling outlets. In person bets are therefore not possible. Residents can turn to Georgia betting sites at offshore sportsbooks and online casinos instead.
If the state ever legalizes sports wagering, it’s highly likely that Georgia would have both retail outlets and online betting options.
Nearby States to Georgia for Betting & Gambling Alternatives
If you would like to visit a state close to Georgia for sports wagering opportunities, you have some options:
- Florida: Florida sports betting occurs at retail outlets on the Seminole Tribe’s lands inside the state. Florida also has multiple major horse racing tracks where you can gamble in person.
- North Carolina: North Carolina sports betting has been legalized. The state started to offer online wagering and limited on-site retail wagering in early 2024.
- Kentucky: Kentucky has retail and online betting options within the state’s borders. Kentucky is also home to multiple horse racing events. This includes the most famous race in the world, the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, which is available for wagering on all horse racing betting sites.
Other Betting Options in GA

The Future of Betting in Georgia
Because the state legislature failed to pass sports betting legislation each of the past five years, the future of betting in Georgia is murky at best.
Legalizing sports betting in the state would require a constitutional amendment. This means a two-thirds majority of lawmakers would need to pass legislation. Considering previous bills to legalize gambling in Georgia have not had enough support to reach a formal vote, reaching a two-thirds majority may be difficult. As it stands, no Georgia sports betting bill is therefore likely to succeed.
Pressure to join other states in allowing gaming may cause some Georgia state legislators to change their minds in the next few years. Georgia may legalize sports betting, as well as mobile sports betting, without the need of brick-and-mortar casinos, but until then, residents can rely on Georgia offshore betting sites.
Responsible Gambling
For some people, sports gambling can become problematic. You may feel like you’re spending too much time on it, or you are losing too much money. If so, responsible gambling resources are available.
Some offshore sportsbooks have responsible gaming tools available. BetWhale offers educational resources to help with responsible gaming. BetOnline gives you self-exclusion tools that lock you out of your account at certain times of the day or for multiple days in a row.
You may also reach out to organizations like Gamblers Anonymous for help. Meanwhile, there are others with the primary aim to protect Georgia citizens from gambling addiction.
Conclusion: Best Betting Site for Georgia Players
