The New York Jets provided Drake Maye a brief reprieve last Thursday night. For the first time in three starts, the New England Patriots quarterback did not face one of the NFL’s top 15 defenses.
At the trade deadline, the Jets traded cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, softening an already vulnerable unit. A top candidate for regular-season MVP, Maye took advantage, engineering a 27-14 victory and extending the Patriots’ winning streak to eight games.
“No one feels outmatched,” linebacker Robert Spillane said after the game, as reported by The Associated Press. “We’re never going to feel like an underdog. We’re going to continue to play team defense, team offense, team football and just let the chips fall where they may.
“We know the real season is ahead of us.”
A second-year starter, Maye continues to fluster defensive coordinators with his ability to create big plays off blitzes. He makes conservative game plans crumble as well. The Jets remained in predominant zone coverage and Maye picked it apart, completing 20 of 26 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown when the Jets failed to press. Maye posted a 115.5 passer rating when he faced the zone.
With Maye emerging as a leader in the next wave of NFL quarterbacks, the Patriots (9-2) are developing into a legitimate playoff contender. The AFC East leaders entered Week 12 favored with +275 odds to finish the 2025 season with the most regular-season wins, according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
The Los Angeles Rams (8-2) drew the second-best odds at +300, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles (8-2) at +325.
The Patriots should be heavily favored to capture their ninth consecutive win next Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (3-7), who have dropped three straight and will compete without suspended star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
