Scottie Scheffler Takes The Lead Into The Weekend

Death, taxes, and Scheffler leading at a major.

Despite the erratic weather conditions, Scheffler managed to shoot a 7-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead at Royal Portrush.

Scheffler heads into the weekend in sole possession of first place at 10-under.

At this point in his career, Scheffler making a run during a tournament is inevitable. The No. 1-ranked golfer made eight birdies on Friday. He could have had a ninth, but his 15-foot birdie attempt on 18 came up inches short.

Scheffler is looking to win his third leg of the career Grand Slam. Scheffler has two wins at the Masters and one at the PGA Championship, the latter coming in May.

Earlier this week, Scheffler made headlines by speaking about his existential crisis in golf.

“This is not a fulfilling life. It’s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it’s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,” Scheffler said about being a professional golfer. “There’s a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfill them in life, and you get there, you get to No. 1 in the world, and they’re like, what’s the point? What is the point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad? That’s something that I wrestle with on a daily basis.”

Looking to defeat Scheffler this weekend is Matthew Fitzpatrick, who is in second place at 9-under. The former U.S. Open champion shot a five-under 66 to sit one shot behind Scheffler.

Brian Harman and Li Haotong are tied for third at 8-under. Harman famously won the 2023 Open Championship.

Northern Ireland native Rory McIlroy is tied for 12th at 3-under.
