Is there a quarterback controversy in San Francisco? For the third time this season, Mac Jones led San Francisco to an improbable win, with Week 5’s 26-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams coming in overtime.
Jones finished 33 of 49 for 342 yards and touchdowns. Jones moved to 3-0 as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.
Up 26-23 in overtime, the Rams elected to run the ball on 4th-and-1 at the 49ers’ 11-yard line instead of kicking the game-tying field goal. San Francisco blew up the play and stopped the Rams from gaining a first down to win.
The 49ers won the game without Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall.
You could field an entire team with the 49ers’ injury report. Purdy, Jennings, and Pearsall did not practice on Wednesday. Jones was also a limited participant with knee and oblique injuries.
Speaking of injuries, the Bucs were without several starters, including Bucky Irving, in Week 5 and still beat the Seahawks 38-35.
Baker Mayfield is an MVP favorite after another sensational performance —29 of 33 for 379 yards and two touchdowns. In all four of the Bucs’ wins, Tampa has taken the lead in the final minute of the game.
Can Tampa win another close game?
The 49ers can exploit Tampa’s struggling secondary, which ranks 27th in opponent dropback EPA and 21st in opponent yards per pass attempt.
Both teams will likely be missing starters on both sides. Taking nothing away from the 49ers’ win, the Rams gave that game away when Kyren Williams fumbled by the goal line in the fourth quarter. If Williams scored, the 49ers would have to score a touchdown with less than a minute left in the game to win.
It doesn’t matter if it’s Purdy or Jones; Mayfield is the better quarterback. I’ll side with Tampa.
Pick: Buccaneers -3 (-110)
49ers vs. Buccaneers Prop
Until something changes, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is the 49ers’ top pass catcher.
McCaffrey has 39 receptions on 52 targets for 387 yards and three touchdowns. McCaffrey has at least 52 receiving yards in all five games.
If Pearsall and Jennings can’t play, McCaffrey becomes the top receiving option for whoever plays quarterback.
Pick: Christian McCaffrey Over 48.5 Receiving Yards (-114)
