Alexandra Eala

Alexandra Eala is the having the tournament of her life.  Fresh off her Round of 64 upset of Jelena Ostapenko, Eala scores her biggest career win by defeating 2025 Australian Open champion and World No. 5 Madison Keys in straight sets.

Eala’s left-handed forehand proved to be a huge asset for her today.  She also played carefree and fearless.  There were some hiccups as the two traded service breaks, and Eala had a medical time-out for a leg issue that proved not to be a factor.

Before the Miami Open, Eala was 140th in the world.  Her highest career ranking was 134th in January 2025.  Eala is currently 117th after the Keys win.

Eala is a graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy.  Nadal gave a shoutout to Eala on social media after the Ostapenko win so we know he is watching both the Filipina 19-year-old and Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong, the 20-year-old Academy player who upset Ben Shelton on Saturday.

Alexandra Eala is only the second player to beat Keys in her amazing 2025 run, including wins at Adelaide and the Australian Open.  Keys is 18-2 this season.

Alexandra Eala’s Dream Run Continues

There is no rest for Eala.  Her next opponent is Paula Badosa.  Badosa gutted out a win earlier on Sunday against Clara Tauson.

Eala is putting the Philippines on the map for tennis.  The country is notorious for boxing because of Manny “The Pacman” Pacquiao’s success.
