Amari Cooper Free Agency Rumors: Sign Back With Dallas Or Rebuild With Raiders?

With the NFL Draft just over a month away, teams are beginning to solidify their rosters and address team needs in free agency. Several high profile wide receivers have moved teams in the offseason but former Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper remains a free agent. Cooper is coming off of a subpar season by his standards but is just 30 years old and with Stefon Diggs cashing in on a huge deal with the Patriots, the price for veteran wide receivers may have just gone up. Below, we’ll examine three potential landing spots for Cooper, including a potential reunion back with the Dallas Cowboys.

Going back to Dallas makes plenty of sense from a football perspective. Cooper enjoyed some of the best seasons of his career in Dallas and proved to be an excellent complement alongside Cedee Lamb. Though his tenure was ultimately cut short, he proved that he still had plenty left in the tank in subsequent stops in Cleveland and Buffalo. Since then, the Cowboys have struggled to replace Cooper in the passing game. Remember, Cooper is only 14 games removed from going for 265 receiving yards against the Houston Texans in 2023. Adding Cooper would also allow the Cowboys to target Ashton Jeanty with the No. 11 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Another potential reunion could be in the works for Cooper, who has been linked to the Las Vegas Raiders. Cooper started his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Raiders in Oakland but his time there was plagued by drops and he hasn’t been with the franchise since 2018. Cooper has since developed a reputation as a sure-handed receiver who has the ability to consistently separate from man coverage, which would make him a major asset on the current roster. A former first-round pick, Cooper could give new quarterback Geno Smith a veteran target in the passing game alongside Brock Bowers and Jacobi Meyers.

Stefon Diggs just signed with the Patriots, who haven’t been afraid to spend during free agency. But if the Patriots are going to build an offense around Drake Maye, they are going to need to do more than just sign an aging slot wide receiver. Last season, first-round pick Ja’Lynn Polk struggled out of the gates. Adding Cooper to the mix would give Maye two veteran pass catchers on the outside and put less pressure on New England’s younger wide receivers to produce right away. Even if the Patriots opt to draft Travis Hunter, signing Cooper would allow New England to manage his snaps and maximize his overall impact on both sides of the ball.
