Beau Atkinson Transfers to Ohio State: Former UNC Defensive Star Joins Defending National Champions

Beau Atkinson is taking his talents from Chapel Hill to Columbus as the star defensive end chases a national title.
After two seasons in Chapel Hill, rising junior defensive end Beau Atkinson is set to continue his college football journey with the reigning national champions, Ohio State. Atkinson, one of North Carolina’s most promising young defenders, entered the transfer portal following the Tar Heels’ spring practices and quickly found a new home with the Buckeyes.
Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 265 pounds, Atkinson brings size, skill, and production to a defensive front that is already among the nation’s best. His move to Columbus is not just a transfer—it’s a statement, for both Atkinson and Ohio State.

From Lanky Prospect to Defensive Force
Atkinson’s story began as a four-star recruit out of Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. Ranked No. 115 nationally and No. 4 in his home state by Rivals, he was a dominant force in high school, racking up 71 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and eight sacks his senior year. He finished his prep career with 22 sacks, attracting attention from a host of top programs including Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, and Miami.
Ultimately, Atkinson chose North Carolina early in his recruitment, eager to make his mark close to home.
After redshirting in 2022 to develop his frame and adjust to the college level, Atkinson emerged in 2023 as a key contributor for the Tar Heels. He played in all 13 games, logging 381 defensive snaps and establishing himself as the team’s top defensive player, according to Pro Football Focus, which graded him at 77.0 for the season.

His numbers backed up the praise: 35 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and five quarterback hurries. Atkinson was not just productive—he was disruptive, a constant presence in opposing backfields.
A Coaching Change and a Fresh Start
Atkinson’s decision to transfer came on the heels of North Carolina’s coaching change, as legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick took over the Tar Heels program. While Belichick’s arrival signals a new era in Chapel Hill, Atkinson opted for a fresh start, one that places him squarely in the national spotlight with Ohio State.
The Buckeyes, fresh off a national championship, were quick to move on Atkinson, adding him to a defensive unit known for its relentless pressure and depth across the line. Atkinson’s blend of length, speed, and technique fits perfectly into Ohio State’s defensive philosophy.
Transfer Portal Window Opens Opportunities
Atkinson’s move comes during the spring transfer portal window, a 10-day period opening April 16, giving players a final opportunity to switch programs ahead of the summer. The portal, which has become an increasingly vital part of roster building, allows players like Atkinson to pursue opportunities that align with both their athletic and academic goals.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Beau Atkinson now steps onto the national stage, joining a championship-caliber team with aspirations of repeating their success. For Ohio State, his arrival strengthens an already formidable defense. For Atkinson, it’s a chance to elevate his game—and chase a title in scarlet and gray.
