Super Bowl LIX is right around the corner, as the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles and Andy Reid’s men are looking to make history by winning three consecutive Super Bowls.
In the build up to the game, former New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, has made a bold statement surrounding the name of the trophy.
The NFL icon has asked for the Lombardi trophy to be renamed and be called the ‘Tom Brady trophy’, honoring the undisputed G.O.A.T QB.
Belichick said: “You got to have good players and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win. You want to put them in a position where if they go out there and play well, they’ll have a chance to win.
“That’s what Coach Bill Parcells taught me, is there’s always a way to win. You just got to figure out what it is, and you have to give the players a chance.”
Belichick and Brady enjoyed a successful time together in New England, winning six Super Bowls together and Brady also obtained a ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The trophy is named after the iconic coach, Vince Lombardi, who won the opening two Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers.
Belichick’s devotion to Brady may be down to the fact that the veteran coach struggled to adapt to life without his star QB.
During their time together, Brady and Belichick held a superb record of 249-75 which is a winning percentage of 76.9% as they dominated the NFL for several years.
However, once Brady left New England, Belichick struggled to replicate this form with the Cleveland Browns and with the Patriots – holding a win rate of 44.9%.
His time in England came to and after the 2023 season, as the Patriots ended the season with a disappointing record of 4-13.
