BYU Lands Rob Wright in Transfer Portal with $3.5 Million NIL Deal
Rob Wright is reportedly committing to BYU, and his NIL deal was pegged at $3.5 million. That puts him among the highest-paid players in college basketball right now. It also shows BYU isn’t messing around in the portal.
Wright was a top-30 recruit in the 2024 class. He’s a 6’1″ guard from Neumann-Goretti in Philadelphia and originally signed with Baylor. Now he’s headed to Provo to run the show alongside AJ Dybantsa and the rest of the overhauled roster.
Even after getting one of the top point guards in the country, BYU may not be done adding to what should be one of the most talented rosters in the country next season.
How Rob Wright Fits with BYU
Jake Lee posted a thread showing why this works. You don’t even need advanced stats — just watch the tape:

Full highlight: scoring 24 vs. Kansas. He can certainly carry the load on a given night. pic.twitter.com/GyytcmKffm

- Example 1: Off-ball catch & shoot – Quick release, clean footwork. Perfect next to a ball-dominant wing like Dybantsa.
- Example 2: Catch & go – He reads the closeout and goes immediately. Doesn’t stall the offense.
- Example 3: Strong with the ball – Absorbs contact, stays upright. Doesn’t get stripped.
- Example 4: Pick & roll – Jails his defender, keeps options alive. Not just spamming ball screens — he thinks through them.
- Example 5: Clutch – Made big plays late. Can get his own shot when everything else breaks down.
There’s also a full game clip floating around of him dropping 24 on Kansas. He can take over when it matters.
What Rob Wright Brings to BYU Basketball
BYU needed a guard who can share the floor with Dybantsa without needing 30% usage.
- They needed a physical defender at the point of attack.
- They needed someone who’s already played big-time basketball and won’t get exposed in the Big 12.
That’s Rob Wright.
BYU isn’t building a team full of YouTube mixtape guys. They’re buying proven production. This deal is one of the biggest swings in the portal so far — and a legit statement that BYU plans to be more than just a Big 12 warm-up act.
