Carolina Hurricanes & Dallas Stars Have Framework For Mikko Rantanen Trade

Mikko Rantanen spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. He has recorded over 90 points in three straight seasons and 70 points in 62 games this year.
The first 49 games were with the Colorado Avalanche this season. The other 13 games have been with the Carolina Hurricanes. Rantanen recorded 64 points in 49 games with the Avs but just six points in 13 games with the Canes. Rantanen enjoyed playing on the same line with Nathan MacKinnon with the Avalanche.
Elliotte Friedman posted the following on X regarding the Canes and Dallas Stars having a framework in place for a deal that would Mikko Rantanen to the Stars:

Carolina Hurricanes & Dallas Stars Have Framework In Place For A Trade
The one critical part of the possible trade is Dallas negotiating an extension for Rantanen. Getting that done or at least close to it will be critical for completing the trade. One reason why Dallas is pursuing Rantanen is they believe he will be willing to sign an extension.
No other details have emerged as to what the Canes will receive for Rantanen.
Dallas is second in the Central Division and will make the playoffs. Dallas’ offense is already stacked, ranking fourth in the league in goals per game. Depending on what they give up, Rantanen further boosts an already good offense. It is a balanced effort for the Stars with four players having over 50 points on the season.
The Stars are a very well-balanced team, ranking third in goals allowed per game and 11th in shots allowed per game.
Rantanen just further helps the Stars potentially make a deep playoff run.
Does Trading Away Mikko Rantanen Hurt The Hurricanes?
The Carolina Hurricanes are second in the Metropolitan Division and will make the playoffs.
They rank 12th in goals per game, third in shots per game, seventh in goals against per game, and first in shots against per game.
Mikko Rantanen has not been nearly as effective or impactful with the Canes as he was with the Avalanche.
Carolina already had a good offense before acquiring Rantanen. Trading away Rantanen can help Carolina. They can acquire players to boost the team more than Rantanen has.
Combined with an excellent defense and good goaltending, the Hurricanes will be just fine offensively if they wind up trading Rantanen.
More details will emerge and nothing is official yet but the framework is in place for the trade and an extension for Rantanen with the Stars.
