Twenty-three years ago, the Miami Hurricanes endured a stunning defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2002 BCS final.
Over the past two-plus decades, the Hurricanes’ program fell from legitimacy for much of that time. They returned to the limelight Wednesday night by upsetting the defending national champion Buckeyes, 24-14, in the 90th Cotton Bowl Classic.
The Buckeyes became the fifth consecutive CFP team to lose coming off an opening-round bye. With former offensive coordinator Brian Hartline off to head the South Florida program, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day assumed the play-calling duties.
The Buckeyes failed to overcome their slow offensive start.

Cool moment! Miami offensive tackle, Sisi Mauigoa went straight to midfield, to do a prayer. He’s been the best offensive lineman in college football this year. He’s projected as a top-10 NFL draft pick in April. #gocanes #CFBPlayoff #GoodyearCottonBowl pic.twitter.com/NnAdoLvXbM
