Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco is on injured reserve with a fractured fibula. The recovery timetable is anywhere from four weeks to three months.
In need of running back depth, the Chiefs signed Kareem Hunt to the practice squad last week. Yesterday, Hunt was elevated to the active 53-man roster, meaning the veteran can play in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
It’s a reunion for Hunt, who played 27 games with the Chiefs during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
Hunt exploded onto the scene as a rookie in 2017 with an NFL-leading 1,327 yards rushing. Halfway through the 2018 season, the Chiefs released Hunt after a video surfaced of him kicking and shoving a woman outside his residence.
In 2019, Hunt signed with the Cleveland Browns, where he played the last five seasons.
Now 29, Hunt believes he can still contribute to an undefeated Kansas City Chiefs team.
“I’m excited to go help shock the world and show them I’ve still got it,” Hunt said via Matt McMullen. “It is still hard to envision. I guess once that day comes, it’s going to feel real because it has been a long time coming. I can’t wait to put on the red again and go out there with these guys and put it all on the line for them. And I envision going out there and, whatever I’m asked to do, just do it at the highest level and help find a way to keep this winning going on around here.”

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid on Carson Steele:
“For his first game, I thought he did a really nice job. He’s gotta do a couple things on protection, but he’ll take care of that… He gives you an honest down. He’s gonna run hard. He’s a big kid. He’s gonna come at ya.” pic.twitter.com/XaHE79WQGe

Samaje Perine also played in Week 3, serving as the change-of-pace back who predominantly played on passing downs. Perine finished with 25 rushing yards on six carries and 15 receiving yards on three catches.
