The Cleveland Browns are planning on moving out of Huntington Bank Field and into a brand-new stadium outside the city. There is some resentment from city officials, especially Cleveland’s mayor, who made some interesting comments earlier this week about the team’s potential plans.

Could Cleveland Browns Move Out Of Downtown Stadium?

In early April, the team released renderings and plans for their new digs. The Browns announced that they were planning on building a new, roofed stadium to be their new home, but much further away from downtown Cleveland.

Instead of playing their home games in the heart of the city as they have since 1999, the new facility would instead be erected outside the city limits in Brook Park. It would be just across the freeway from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, and about a 17-mile drive from their current stadium.

Mayor Justin Bibb had hoped that the Haslem’s would keep their team within the city limits, and had a harsh comment regarding the situation earlier this week. In an interview with Fox 8 News, Bibb stated that the city has “more important priorities than the Cleveland Browns”, and added the following sentiment:

“If they go to Brook Park, God bless them. Good luck.”

The comment caused something of a stir amongst local residents. Despite their on-field struggles, the Browns are an integral part of the Cleveland community, and have a fan base that cares deeply about their franchise. Bibb’s statement rubbed some the wrong way, which caused him to release a statement on Wednesday that clarified some of his outlook.

In the statement that was posted to Twitter, Bibb reiterated that while keeping the Browns in downtown is a “critical issue”, the Haslems are taking extreme measures in their attempted move to Brook Park. He went on to question the legality of the ownership’s tactics in their attempt to relocate.

Despite the release of the stadium renderings and proposed location, there is no timetable or projected date for any groundbreaking.
