College Football Playoff Rankings: Second Bracket

The Oregon Ducks are the top seed for the second consecutive week.

Behind the Ducks are the Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, and Penn State Nittany Lions.

When it comes to the bracket, Ohio State and Penn State are outside of the top four because they are not the highest-ranked in the Big 10. That belongs to Oregon.

The top four seeds will be conference champions. If the season ended today, those teams would be Oregon (Big Ten), Texas (SEC), BYU (Big 12), and Miami (ACC). These four teams would receive first-round byes.

The fifth-highest-ranked conference champion will earn a spot in the 12-team playoff. Therefore, No. 13 Boise State is the No. 12 seed, bumping Georgia out of the playoff.

First Round:

  • No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Ohio State
  • No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Penn State
  • No. 10 Alabama at No. 7 Indiana
  • No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Tennessee

*Matchups are based on seeding rules.

Quarterfinals:

  • No. 4 Miami vs. (No. 12 Boise State vs. No. 5 Ohio State)
  • No. 3 BYU vs. (No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Penn State)
  • No. 2 Texas vs. (No. 10 Alabama at No. 7 Indiana)
  • No. 1 Oregon vs. (No. 9 Notre Dame at No. 8 Tennessee)

The first teams out of the College Football Playoff are No. 12 Georgia and No. 14 SMU.

After losing to Ole Miss, Georgia finds themselves in danger of missing the playoff entirely with another loss. However, the Bulldogs have a chance to move back into the playoff with a win over Tennessee on Saturday.

SMU also has a clear path to the playoff. If the Mustangs win out, they will play for the ACC Championship. Win that, and they’ll be a top-four seed.
