Cowboys Team Needs: 5 Positions To Target In NFL Draft & Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2025 offseason with a new head coach, Brian Schottenheimer. After failing to make the playoffs with a 7-10 record, the Cowboys must address several team needs this offseason. These are the five positions the Dallas Cowboys should target in the NFL Draft and free agency.
Running Back

After having either Ezekiel Elliott or Tony Pollard in the backfield since 2014, Dallas presumably punted on the running back position in 2024.
Instead of signing Derrick Henry, the Cowboys turned to Rico Dowdle, who had a disappointing season with 1,079 yards and two touchdowns.
With Dak Prescott coming off a major injury, the Cowboys must improve their running game for the upcoming season.
Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty could solve many of the Cowboys’ offensive problems.
A true three-down back, Jeanty would be the starter on day one. Look for the Cowboys to entertain picking Jeanty with the No. 12 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Wide Receiver
Why the Cowboys would be the best fit for Rams WR Cooper Kupp.
The do-everything receiver is on the block. Here's why a trade to Dallas makes sense, beyond the fact that his dad and grandfather played for the Cowboys.

CeeDee Lamb is an excellent No. 1 option.
Lamb’s numbers declined this year, from 135/1,749/12 in 2023 to 101/1,194/6.
Even before the Prescott injury, the Cowboys had a major hole at No. 2 receiver. Jalen Tolbert occupied the role for most of the year, catching 49 receptions for 610 yards and seven touchdowns.
Owner Jerry Jones should solidify the No. 2 wide receiver position by trading for LA’s Cooper Kupp.
Defensive Tackle
.@dallascowboys v @Giants the andwer is YES YES YES….the Cowboys can play run defense when they plug the gaps and attack the LOS. The G-men averaged 1 yard/carry. #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/tbSvmqt6ay

The Cowboys’ run defense could not stop a nosebleed in 2024.
Dallas allowed the fourth most rushing yards per game (137.1).
As great as Micah Parsons is, his job remains to sack the quarterback. Dallas needs to plug up some running lanes with elite defensive tackles.
Losing their best defensive tackle, Osa Odighizuwa, to free agency is a real option.
Cornerback
Cowboys save over $9.6M in cap room if they cut Trevon Diggs post June 1.
Is that worth it or should they run it back with Diggs and Bland and hope for a repeat of a couple of years ago?pic.twitter.com/kElv2AEgyo

In a passing league, you can never have enough cornerbacks.
Dallas’ pass defense was middle of the pack at 218.1 yards per game.
Trevon Diggs has only played 13 games combined in the last two seasons.
Daron Bland also had his 2024 campaign cut short.
Don’t expect Dallas to break the bank for a cornerback, but targeting one in the later rounds of the draft should be a priority.
Offensive Line

The Dallas Cowboys offensive line was once considered the best unit in football. The days are long gone.
Future Hall of Famer Zack Martin contemplated retirement last season before coming back. Martin, 34, will likely consider retirement even more this offseason.
The Cowboys need to leave the draft at the very least with one lineman. Though drafting a second lineman is not a bad idea at all.
