Deion Sanders On Coaching In The NFL: ‘I Couldn’t Coach Pro Ball’

Deion Sanders is currently the head football coach at the University of Colorado, and it will stay that way in 2025. Despite rumors that he might jump to the NFL, Sanders admitted he couldn’t coach “pro ball.”

On his Tubi show, We Got Time Today, Sanders spoke with NFL Hall of Famer and his former Dallas Cowboys teammate, Troy Aikman, about their time together in the NFL.
Sanders reflected on the Cowboys’ practices in the 1990s and how players’ work ethic is less today than when he played. That’s why Sanders believes he’s better off coaching in college than in the NFL.
“I couldn’t coach pro ball,” Sanders said on a recent episode. “That’s why I say, I couldn’t coach — I know it was cute. But I couldn’t coach pro ball, because the way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn’t take it. As a man, and as a football enthusiast, and I care about the game. The game is still providing for Troy and I, so there is no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”
Did Coach Prime Ever Consider Coaching The Cowboys?

After the Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy, owner Jerry Jones spoke to Sanders about becoming the next head coach.
Coach Prime was considered a top candidate for the Dallas job, though he never formally interviewed.
Ultimately, Sanders elected to stay at Colorado, and Jones promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.
Though Sanders admitted his unwillingness to coach in the NFL, Aikman thought Coach Prime to the Cowboys made a lot of sense.
“For Dallas, Deion would have been a really good fit because he would have commanded the room, and his personality is such that people would have known that he was in charge,” Aikman said to Sanders’ Tubi co-host, Rocsi Diaz. “And I think that’s important for [an] organization to know that the head coach is the one who’s calling the shots and that he’s in charge.”
Sanders will look to improve upon a 9-4 season at Colorado that ended with a loss in the Alamo Bowl. Meanwhile, the Cowboys will attempt to make their first championship since Sanders and Aikman led Dallas to a victory in Super Bowl XXX nearly 30 years ago.
