Despite Swirling Rumors, The Mavericks Are ‘Not Encouraging Trade Inquiries’ For Kyrie Irving

The Dallas Mavericks are 4-12 to begin the 2025-26 season. In their last 10 games, the team is 2-8 and has lost two straight. That includes a narrow 113-111 loss to the Knicks on Wednesday.

Injuries have been a major storyline to begin the year for Dallas. Kyrie Irving suffered a torn ACL in March and is working his way back on the court. Recently, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said Irving could miss the entire 2025-26 season due to “other reasons.” He hinted that the team could look to trade the veteran guard. However, insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks are “not encouraging trade inquiries” for Kyrie Irving.

Dallas reportedly doesn’t want to part ways with Kyrie Irving this season

At the 2022-23 trade deadline, Brooklyn shipped one-time NBA champion Kyrie Irving to Dallas. In return, Brooklyn received Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a 2029 first-round pick, and two second-round picks. Kyrie has started all 128 games he’s appeared in for Dallas over three seasons. In March 2025, the veteran guard suffered an unfortunate injury. Irving tore his ACL and was forced to miss the remainder of the year.

Additionally, Kyrie Irving has been forced to miss the start of 2025-26 as he continues to recover. Earlier this week, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon shared that Kyrie Irving could miss the entire year for “other reasons.” He suggested the team could look to trade Irving and get draft capital for the future. Despite MacMahon’s reporting, sources close to Dallas had conflicting information.

NBA insider Marc Stein shared that the Mavericks are “not encouraging trade inquiries” for Kyrie Irving. This past offseaosn, Irving inked a three-year, $119 million extension to stay with Dallas. Stein reported that Kyrie Irving and rookie Cooper Flagg are “vibing nicely” in their practice sessions. Both played at Duke and were top picks in their respective draft class.

Dallas is much thinner at guard than they are at forward. Keeping a player of Kyrie Irving’s caliber is a top priority for the Mavericks. While the team is not interested in trading Kyrie, the same cannot be said for Anthony Davis. Sources around the league reported that Dallas will listen to trade offers for the one-time NBA champion PF. Davis has missed 11 consecutive games for the Mavs due to a calf injury. Over the course of two seasons, Davis has appeared in 14 total games for Dallas. All signs point to the team being willing to part ways with the 32-year-old Anthony Davis. However, Kyrie Irving is a player they want to stick around.
