The 2025 Laver Cup concluded on Sunday night with Team World winning in resounding fashion. Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev to put Team World over the necessary 13 point hump.
This marks only the third time Team Wold has won the Laver Cup tournament. Team World is now 5-3 overall.
There was an impressive quality of tennis played in San Francisco over the weekend; however, there is always an argument among tennis purists and fans if the Laver Cup really matters. One big reason many believe it does not is because the players do not earn or lose ranking points based on their performances.
Despite that one drawback, the Laver Cup matters greatly.
Why Is The Laver Cup Important?
Tennis is very good at paying homage to its forefathers and history. Rod Laver is a legend and icon in the sport of a previous generation. Keeping his name and face in tennis conversation is wonderful for fans to understand where and how the sport is evolved.
Roger Federer has kept pretty close to tennis in the years after his retirement and that’s one thing I’m thankful that Laver Cup has made possible.

Of course, having Roger Federer involved in this tournament is a win because he is spanning the Laver generation and the current tennis generation.
Beyond that, the players, some of which who did not go to college and have the benefit of playing college team tennis, really thrive in the environment of playing as a team. To that end, the team coach, who works with them individually and may recommend different strategies and tactics, helps the players evolve and develop.

Taylor Fritz is a primary example from this year’s Laver Cup. Under Andre Agassi and Pat Rafter’s tutelage, he defeated World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz for the first time in his career, and World No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the span of 24 hours. That should and could embolden Fritz in big moments in Grand Slams (and beyond) when he faces these players again.
The players play with an intensity that shows how important it is for them to win the Laver Cup. We saw the agony of defeat on Holger Rune and Alexander Zverev’s faces in their losses. They are not treating it like an exhibition.

One more thing this event does is open tennis to a new and broader fanbase by moving it around the world to different locations each year. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in San Francisco to watch tennis over the weekend. NFL reporter Melissa Stark was also. Steph Curry and Pau Gasol were also present.
