Heartwarming 2025 Laver Cup Sightings

The 2025 Laver Cup opens on Friday, September 19 in San Francisco, California.

Team Europe is 5-2 and the defending champion of the event.

Casper Ruud will begin Team Europe’s defense on Friday in singles against Reilly Opelka, followed by Jakub Mensik vs. Alex Michelsen, Flavio Cobolli vs. Joao Fonseca, and the final match of the day is a doubles dual between Team Europe’s Carlos Alcaraz and Mensik and Team World’s Taylor Fritz and Michelsen.

This is a great day of tennis, but the days leading up to the start of play have produced some heartwarming moments.

87-year-old Australian tennis legend and the namesake of the event, Rod Laver, is in San Francisco for the event. That is a blessing that cannot always be counted on given Laver’s age and the fact that he did not make it to the 2025 Australian Open. Laver making the trip and posing with his fellow Aussies, Team World’s Vice Captain and recent roster addition Alex de Minaur who was selected to replace Frances Tiafoe who withdrew last week.

2. Joao Fonseca Meets Roger Federer For The First Time

Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca had a very relatable reaction to meeting Roger Federer for the first time. He was excited and anxious. Federer was his usual easy-going self, and it was great to see tennis past meet tennis future.

3. The Love and Respect Between Carlos Alcaraz And Alexander Zverev

Tennis is an individual sport for 95% of the season, but it is obvious that these players like the team element of these events so they can compete as friends and not peers.
