How Many Eagles Players from the 2017 Super Bowl Season Are Still on the Team?
For the second time in the last six years, the Philadelphia Eagles are going back to the Super Bowl.
This year’s team looks a whole lot different from the 2017 championship group. Nick Sirianni has replaced Doug Pederson as the head coach, Jalen Hurts has become the franchise quarterback, and nearly every position group comprises new players who weren’t on the roster six seasons ago.
But there are a few familiar faces back for their second Super Bowl appearance with Philadelphia. So, how many players from the 2017 Eagles are still on the team today?
The Philadelphia Eagles are back in the Super Bowl
The Eagles are back in the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2017 season, which is fairly impressive considering the major roster and coaching turnover they’ve gone through in the last six years.
Doug Pederson, who led Philadelphia to its first championship ever, was fired in 2021 and replaced by Nick Sirianni. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz were also replaced by Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon, respectively.
As for the roster, all of the offensive skill players from the 2017 team are gone. Carson Wentz has started for two different teams since 2017, Nick Foles has bounced around as a backup QB, and every running back, wide receiver, and tight end either moved to another team or retired shortly after the Super Bowl run.
On defense, the linebackers, cornerbacks, and safeties are all different. There are many new faces on the offensive and defensive lines, but that’s also where we find the handful of players who won a Super Bowl ring in 2017 and will suit up next Sunday in search of their second title.
How many Eagles players from 2017 are still on the team?
Most of the current Eagles roster is completely different from the 2017 team, but there are a few crucial pieces to their sustained success that are still around today.
On the offensive line, Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, and Isaac Seumalo are still starting for the Eagles six years later. All three linemen were drafted by Philadelphia before 2017 and haven’t played for another team in the NFL.
The same can be said for Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham, the two defensive players still with the team. Derek Barnett is also included in that group, but he suffered a season-ending injury early in the season and won’t be available for the Super Bowl.
Jake Elliott, whom the Eagles drafted in 2017 and won a Super Bowl in his rookie year, and long-snapper Rick Lovato are the only special teams players still with the team today.
In total, eight players from Philly’s Super Bowl-winning team are still on the Eagles in 2023. They’ll have a chance to win their second championship in six years next Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.
