Some people will tell you that they watch the Super Bowl “just for the commercials”. The advertisements that run during the game every year are an attraction in themselves, and have become as much a part of the holiday as football and appetizers. In order to have their product or service displayed in front of more than 120 million Americans, companies will pay top dollar for ad spots, and save some of their best work for the biggest television day of the year.

How Much Does A 30-Second Super Bowl Commercial Cost?

The price to advertise has been rising every year. During the first Super Bowl back in 1967, the cost was $37,500 for a 30-second time slot ($352,195 adjusted for inflation). That figure only expanded with the game’s popularity as the years rolled on, and reached $1 million per 30 seconds during the early 1990s.

There was a period of slower growth when it came to advertising prices. In 1999, a commercial slot cost just north of $2 million, and wouldn’t reach the $3 million mark until 2010. But the price has more than doubled in the 15 years since, and it might not be long before we see 8 and 9 million dollar figures.

In recent years, and as it will be for the 2025 version, the cost has risen to more than $7 million. According to reports, all of the ad slots were sold out by the first week of November, marking one of the earliest sellouts in the last 10 years.

Broken down, that $7 million figure comes out to $233,333 per second.

Other television events with large viewership don’t even come close when it comes to their advertising prices. The cost of a 30-second spot during the 2018 NBA Finals was $700,000, the same year that a Super Bowl ad ran for $5,200,000. For the most recent World Series between the Yankees and Dodgers, two of the marquee franchises in the sport, FOX was asking for $500,000.

Certain companies have become mainstays in Super Bowl advertising over the years. Budweiser has produced plenty of memorable ads, and every notable car company has done what they can to get in on the act. In recent years, companies like Amazon entered the conversation, and UberEats is already teasing their upcoming commercial(s) for the 2025 version.
