Joao Fonseca Advances To 1st Career ATP Final At Argentina Open

In a match with just about everything tennis fans could want or imagine, Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca advanced to his first ATP final at the Argentina Open. There was drama, multiple match points, and an injury. After the match, Fonseca thanked the fans for helping him to win with heart and some pain.
Fonseca had a chance to close it out in straight sets, but Laslo Djere played tough and forced a third set. Fonseca had the physio attend to him two times for an apparent lower right back issue.

If Cerundolo wins, fans will be emotional and divided between the Brazilian Fonseca who draws huge crowds and massive excitement, and the Argentinian native and hometown favorite Francisco Cerundolo.

Fonseca followed it up with an Australian Open first-round straight-set upset of Andrey Rublev.
He is one of the biggest young stars on the ATP Tour and if all goes well, he could challenge the slightly older players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, in the coming years. Currently ranked 99th, Fonseca nearly took the collegiate route but chose to forego his commitment to the University of Virginia after his 2024 success.
