Justin Tucker sets up to kick.

With the New Orleans Saints needing a new kicker, did the team sign free agent Justin Tucker?

New Orleans Saints Kicker Decision

The Saints are going in a different direction at kicker.

Per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football, the Saints are signing kicker Cade York to their practice squad.

This past Sunday, Saints kicker Blake Grupe missed two field goals in a 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Grupe has missed eight kicks this season, and Sunday’s pair of misses was the final straw.

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Saints are releasing Grupe.

The team brought in York and Tucker for a tryout on Tuesday. In the end, York, not Tucker, wins the job.

York, 24, has played for the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and Cincinnati Bengals.

York has made 33 of 45 field goals (73.3%) in his career. York has hit 51 of 54 extra points.

What Happened to Justin Tucker?

Tucker is currently on the sidelines, waiting for another chance to fight for a roster spot.

In May, the Ravens released Tucker following an NFL investigation into his sexual misconduct allegations. While with the Ravens, Tucker was accused of sexual misconduct with 16 massage therapists at eight different spas in the Baltimore area between 2012 and 2016.

Tucker has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them “unequivocally false.”

Following the investigation, the NFL suspended Tucker for the first 10 weeks of the NFL season. Tucker was eligible for reinstatement on Nov. 11.

Because of the allegations against Tucker, the Saints faced criticism for inviting the former All-Pro kicker in for a tryout. Coach Kellen Moore addressed those concerns on Monday.

“He’s been a really good kicker in this league for a really long time and he’s had a ton of success and he’s been a leader for Baltimore for a long time,” Moore said via Nola.com. “He’s been one of their leaders for an extended period of time with a very successful team and so obviously there’s been some stuff that’s been unfortunate. He’s gone through an experience and I think it’s about collecting what that experience was and we’ll evaluate the football aspect of it and we’ll evaluate everything else as well.”

The Ravens released Tucker with three years remaining on a 2022 four-year, $22 million contract extension. Tucker was the highest-paid kicker in the league at the time.

Tucker was once considered the NFL’s top kicker, earning five First-Team All-Pro selections and seven Pro Bowls.

In 2024, Tucker had his worst season as a kicker, making a career-low 73.3% of his field goals (22-30).
