Kevin Love Dan Patrick Cooper Flagg

Kevin Love has responded to radio host Dan Patrick’s comments saying that Cooper Flagg having a career similar to his would be a disappointment.

Having increasingly entertained the masses on social media with some very creative posts in recent times, Love took the high road on this occasion. NBA Twitter had plenty to say about Love catching a stray from Patrick but Love seemed to agree with the overall sentiment.

Firstly, for context, here’s what Patrick had to say on The Dan Patrick Show:

“If you said his career was going to be like Kevin Love’s, would that be a disappointment?” Patrick asked rhetorically. “And it probably would be. This is somebody who’s scrimmaged against the Olympic team, held his own, he’s 18-years-old. He’s gonna make a billion dollars if he stays healthy, he’ll probably get a couple of max deals in there.”

Love is currently playing for the Miami Heat and is a five-time All-Star, two-time All-NBAer, and memorably won an NBA title in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nothing is guaranteed in life and Flagg would probably take Love’s resume right now.

He first made a name for himself playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, having a career-best year in 2011-12 with 26.0 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. He won the rebounding title the season before.

“For those who will take this as a shot at me…I don’t take it as such,” Love wrote on X. “I was pure skill & will. Cooper is far more talented than I ever was and if he stays healthy will have a far better career. He could very well have a statue by the time he’s finished. I’m a HUGE fan.”

Patrick’s Comparison Extended Beyond Love

Patrick was giving an expanded take on not only the expectations Flagg is coming in with but how he views him as a player.

There is no doubt that Flagg has an extreme level of hype as he gets set to make his move to the NBA. He will more than likely be selected No. 1 overall and will be viewed as a program changer for whichever team that drafts him.

Patrick didn’t want to be “unfair” to Flagg by comparing him to Larry Bird, but saw similarities to one of the game’s current greats.

“I’m watching Cooper Flagg and I kept thinking, he reminds me of Kevin Durant,” Patrick said. “Once again, these labels, it’s tough now if you don’t score 30 a game — ‘Oh, he’s a bust.’ He might average 20, nine, and seven, which is still pretty good! But, when you’re anointed at 18 as the best player in the game, you probably could’ve played on the Olympic team you’re that good. You leave high school a year early, you go to Duke, maybe wins a national championship, the expectation level… You’ve got teams tanking for him as well.”
