Sacramento Kings Coach Mike Brown Signs Three-Year, $30M Contract Extension

Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown has agreed on a three-year, $30 million contract extension that will keep him with the NBA team through the 2026-27 season and give him a raise of $8.5 million per season, his agent Warren LeGarie announced Friday night.

Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown is 94-70 in the regular season, 3-4 in the playoffs the past two seasons

Brown, 54, was offered a $4.5 million raise on his 2024-25 contract and two new seasons at $8.5 million, LeGarie said. Under Brown the past two seasons, the Kings have gone 94-70 (.573) in the regular season and 3-4 (.429) in the playoffs.

The Ohio native played a large role in helping Sacramento make the postseason in 2022-23, finishing 48-34 with the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference to end a 16-year playoff drought.

However, the Kings lost in seven games to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference first-round series. Despite falling short, Brown still won 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year by a unanimous vote.

In the 2023-24 season, the Kings also went 46-36 (.561) and finished with the No. 9 seed in the conference, defeating the Warriors in the play-in tournament before the New Orleans Pelicans eliminated them.

Brown is the first Kings coach to have a winning record in each of his first two seasons since Rick Adelman

Brown is the first Kings coach to have a winning record in each of his first two seasons with the franchise since Rick Adelman from 1998 to 2000, per ESPN Stats & Information.

Moreover, Brown is now a two-time NBA Coach of the Year after winning his first award with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. He coached the Cavs for five seasons (2005-10) before getting fired, and he then went on to coach the Los Angeles Lakers for two seasons (2011-13).

Following the 2012-13 season, Brown returned to Cleveland for a brief stint and coached the Cavs to just a 33-49 (.402) record, missing the playoffs. He joined the Kings in May 2022 after the Cavs fired him for a second time.

As a head coach, Brown is 441-286 (.607) in the regular season and 50-40 (.556) in the playoffs.

Since Brown’s arrival, the Kings’ value has increased 49% from $2.03 billion in 2022 to $3.46 billion in 2023.
