After finishing as finalist at the China Open to Jannik Sinner, Tien quickly regrouped, and he is in the Round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, the last American man left in the draw.

Learner Tien comes back from 4-6, 0-3* to beat Corentin Moutet 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and reach the 3rd round in Shanghai.

Get To Know Learner Tien
Tien was born in California to Vietnamese parents on December 5, 2005.
He turned pro in 2023, and since then, his best Grand Slam finish was a fourth round result at the 2025 Australian Open.
Tien is coached by American tennis legend, former World No. 2, and 1989 French Open champion Michael Chang.

Learner Tien has achieved his career-high best ranking as a result of his China Open success. He is World No. 36.
Though his game and demeanor are different than Fonseca’s, his ranking is seven spots ahead of the Brazilian tennis star.
American Men Storming The ATP Top Rankings
For all of the publicity and documented success of the American women tennis players, the American men are holding their own with players at the top of the ATP rankings.
Tien at World No. 36, is the seventh highest ranked American man behind Taylor Fritz (4), Ben Shelton (6), Tommy Paul (15), Frances Tiafoe (28), Brandon Nakashima (32), and Alex Michelsen (34).
Where the American men have fallen short is at the Grand Slams. The last American man to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Neither Michelsen or Tien was born at the time of Andy Roddick’s win.
As Tien continues to compete at a high level, the end of the season and 2026 look to be exciting times for him to ascend the rankings and continue his pursuit of his maiden ATP title.
