Elise Mertens captured the 2025 WTA 250 Libema Open (Rosmalen) title on Sunday after an amazing and emotional week of tennis. Mertens, 29, is showing no signs of slowing down. Though 2018 was viewed as the best year of her singles career, she is coming on strong in 2025. The Libema Open title is Mertens’ second of the year, and her first singles grass court trophy. She ranks 8th in the WTA in 2025 with 25 wins on the year. Elise Mertens Made Magic In Semifinals Many thought Mertens would never make it to the final. In Saturday’s semifinal match against Ekaterina Alexandrova, she saved an Open era record 11 match points on the way to the win. 11 match points saved! 🤯 Very happy to be in the finals 🌱🤩 @LibemaOpen #nevergiveup pic.twitter.com/S38ZxxrQmi — Elise Mertens (@elise_mertens) June 14, 2025 After the match, Mertens was overwhelmed and emotional and admitted to losing count to how many match points she faced. Though there were tense moments in the final when Mertens was occasionally chirping at her coaching box, none matched the stress of the semifinal match. Mertens Is Well Known For Doubles Elise Mertens has advanced to at least the fourth round at each Grand Slam, with semfinal and quarterfinal appearances at the Australian Open (2018) and US Open (2019-2020), respectively, but she is more well known for her impressive doubles resume. She has 21 doubles titles including four Grand Slams, three with former partner and World No. 1 singles player Aryna Sabalenka. Mertens and Sabalenka were the top ranked doubles team in 2021 before Sabalenka stepped away to focus on singles. Elise Mertens is currently ranked 25th in singles and 20th in doubles. Can she make a deep run in Wimbledon singles and doubles with the confidence gained from this Libema Open grass court win? We will find out later in the month when Wimbledon begins on June 30.
