First played in 1969, the PGA Tour event currently known as the RBC Heritage has long been the tournament directly following the Masters.

It’s also one of only a few tournaments on the schedule given “invitational” status by the PGA Tour, meaning the field is a bit smaller than a full-field event, and in 2023, it was also made a designated event. Played at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina, a par-71 layout designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, the RBC Heritage boasts a strong list of winners featuring some of golf’s all-time greats.

The inaugural edition was won by the late great Arnold Palmer, and since then, “The King” has been joined by the likes of Hale Irwin, Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Davis Love III, Greg Norman, Payne Stewart, Nick Price, Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard, Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, and Jordan Spieth.

But are any of these high-profile players responsible for the lowest single-round or 72-hole scores at the RBC Heritage? Let’s take a look.

What is the lowest single-round score at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town?

The lowest single round ever shot at Harbour Town Golf Links during the RBC Heritage is a 10-under 61, a record currently shared by two players.

The first to accomplish the feat was 10-time PGA Tour winner David Frost, who shot 61 during the second round of the 1994 event, which was then known as the MCI Heritage Golf Classic. The South African shot 72-67 over the final two rounds to tie for fourth at 14-under, four back of winner Hale Irwin.

Frost’s record stood for more than two decades until it was matched by Troy Merritt, who fired a 10-under 61 in the second round of the 2015 RBC Heritage. While Merritt held a four-stroke lead after 36 holes, he also failed to win the tournament, finishing in solo third at 16-under. Jim Furyk and Kevin Kisner were tied at 18-under after 72 holes, and Furyk won the tournament on the second playoff hole.

As for the lowest 72-hole score in RBC Heritage history, that honor belongs to Webb Simpson.

In the 2020 edition, which was played in June due to COVID-19, the 2012 U.S. Open champ shot 65-65-68-64 to finish at 22-under, besting Abraham Ancer by a single stroke to claim his seventh PGA Tour title.

The previous mark was held by Brian Gay, who shot 20-under at the 2009 event. Gay’s 10-stroke margin of victory remains the largest in tournament history.
