Dallas Mavericks star big man Anthony Davis has sustained ligament damage in his left hand and could miss several months if surgery is required, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon on Friday.
Anthony Davis Injured Hand Against Jazz
Davis, 32, is getting a second opinion on his injured hand after sustaining the injury during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss at Utah. He appeared to injure his left hand while he was defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive.
The 10-time All-Star exited the game with 2:08 remaining and did not return. He was reportedly “doubled over in pain” in the tunnel of the arena, according to MacMahon.

Injuries at this stage of Davis’ NBA career could force his retirement.
Davis also suffered an adductor strain in his Mavericks debut that sidelined him for 18 games. The 6-fo0t-10 big man then missed 14 consecutive games this season because of a left calf strain.
In addition, Davis left a nationally televised matchup with the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day because of right adductor soreness, which sidelined him the final two games of 2025.
Raptors, Hawks Interested In Davis Trade
Although Davis has been linked to teams such as the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks, his latest setback could make interested teams reconsider any potential trade offers.
MacMahon also reported Thursday during ESPN’s Howdy Partners that Davis and his representatives are pushing for a trade to a team that is interested in offering him an extension.
He’s currently in the first season of a three-year, $175.36 million contract.
“I think that based on what I’ve been told, based on what I’m hearing, AD’s agent is reading the situation and basically saying: ‘Hey, it’s in my client’s best interest to get traded before this deadline,’” MacMahon said Thursday while on Howdy Partners.
“So I do believe there is going to come a push from that side, despite — you know, honestly, AD, family guy, nobody wants to uproot their family in the middle of a season. But, you know, again — the preference is comfort. The priority is getting paid again.”
The Mavericks acquired Davis at last season’s trade deadline in a shocking move that sent superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers. This ultimately led to the Mavs firing then-general manager Nico Harrison in November.
Through 20 appearances (all starts) this season, Davis has averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.7 blocks, and 31.3 minutes per game while shooting 50.6% from the field and 27% from 3-point range.
The Mavs are 10-10 with Davis in the lineup this season but just 4-14 when he’s unavailable.
