Mirra Andreeva Defeats Iga Swiatek: BNP Paribas Open Will Crown Maiden Champion

17-year-old Mirra Andreeva has done it again. She defeated World No. 2 Iga Swiatek in Dubai last month en route to her maiden WTA 1000 title. Andreeva did the unthinkable. The loss catapults Andreeva into her second WTA 1000 final in weeks. She is already in the Top 10, ranked at No. 8, but that ranking could climb higher.
She will face the winner of the rematch of the Australian Open final between Aryna Sabalenka and Madison Keys.
Mirra Andreeva Made Big Shots When It Mattered
Swiatek played a good match. Both she and Andreeva had to deal with windy conditions and dropping temperatures as they played.
Andreeva made the big shots when it mattered. She suffered a letdown in the second set after winning the first in a tiebreak. Andreeva went to the locker room before the third set, changed her shirt, and came out renewed.
Mirra Andreeva broke Iga Swiatek immediately in the third set and never looked back. She also broke her to win the match by the score of 7-6, 1-6, and 6-3.
If we have learned anything about the 2025 tennis season, it is to expect the unexpected. Swiatek and Sabalenka have had winning streaks broken, and other players are winning titles weekly including Andreeva, Amanda Anisimova, and Belinda Bencic.
Andreeva’s rise has been nothing short of amazing. She broke onto the WTA Tour in 2023. Against top ten players she has been amazing, defeating Elena Rybakina two times, Swiatek two times, and Aryna Sabalenka once. Coached by Grand Slam champion Conchita Martinez, Andreeva has a high tennis IQ and the serves and strokes to back it up.
Congratulations Mirra Andreeva!
