Plenty has been made about the new style of batting equipment that the New York Yankees have been using early in the 2025 MLB season. The new “torpedo” bats were heavily used in their record-breaking 20-9 win against the Brewers over the weekend, but the “new” style has apparently been used before, as it has been revealed that they helped Giancarlo Stanton during last season’s run at the World Series.

Yankees New Bats Aren’t As New As We Thought

The Yankees hit a franchise record nine home runs in Saturday’s game. In the hours that followed, stories started to circulate about some players on the team using a bat that is unorthodox in appearance. The “torpedo” bats feature more wood closer to the barrel, which creates more mass at the point of contact. They are the product of research by an MIT physicist, and aren’t found to be in violation of any MLB rules or standards.

But they might not be as new as some people think. Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez provided some interesting information on Sunday, saying that his teammate Giancarlo Stanton used the new style of bat during last year’s playoff run.

It is unclear how frequently Stanton utilized the torpedo bat in the 14 postseason games that New York played, but he did hit 7 home runs, or 0.5 per game in comparison to his 0.23 per game average in the regular season.

There is no direct and obvious correlation between the team hitting home runs and the new equipment that they have employed. At least not yet. Aaron Judge is one of the players that is notably not using the unique style of bat, and he is already up to 4 home runs and 11 RBIs through the Yankees’ first three games of the season.

Soon enough, it won’t be just the New York Yankees that are using the torpedo bats. According to reports, select players on the Cubs, Orioles, Twins, Blue Jays, and Red Sox were using them, and the Braves have ordered some of the bats as well.

The production of the players utilizing the equipment will be something to keep an eye on.
